HISTORY

During the 1950’s through the early 1990’s, Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company operated as two companies:  a coal mining company in the Western United States and a coke producer in Kentucky and Alabama.

The coal company produced mid-volatile metallurgical coal operating near Carbondale, Colorado, supplying the two primary coke plants in the Western United States.

The coke company operated two non-recovery batteries and developed a network of relationships with other integrated producers to market their small by-product coke.  Mid-Continent developed a reputation for supplying high carbon metallurgical coke to the steel, alloy and chemical industries in the Midwest and in the Southern United States.

Today, Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company is an international sales company headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A., producing coke, nut coke, coke breeze, dry coke, petroleum coke, anthracite and other carbon products.  We operate 15 screening plants and have inventory locations that produce and store accurately-sized metallurgical coke for sintering, pelletizing and electric furnace operations for ferro alloy, phosphorous and calcium carbide production.  Mid-Continent has long-term purchase agreements to move excess coke breeze as it is produced from most of the major producers in North America, providing both service and cash flow.  These valuable relationships have been developed over the past 50 years.  With our network of supply, processing, and transportation, we have the capability to reach all the industrial carbon markets via any mode of transportation from an ocean vessel to a truckload quantity.

Our international exposure shows us doing business on five continents, buying and selling metallurgical coke products, anthracite and petroleum coke.

Mid-Continent’s dry carbon business has grown with the advance of the modern large electric furnace industry in North America.  Mid-Continent is a primary supplier of injection and charge carbon to this growing sector of the steel industry.  We utilize five drying plants strategically located in North America to meet this demand.
